**The Nigerian Army Upholds Democratic Values Amid Calls for Military Takeover**
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has emphatically stated that the Nigerian military will not heed any calls for a takeover of the democratically elected government, underscoring the Army's commitment to maintaining the country's democratic principles. Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at the opening ceremony of the COAS Combined 2nd and 3rd Quarters Conference, Lagbaja highlighted the significance of preserving the "new prestige" the Army has carefully cultivated over the past 25 years.
Addressing the growing calls for military intervention, primarily from younger Nigerians who did not experience Nigeria’s previous military rule, Lagbaja stressed that the Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically place any interest in power. He emphasized that the Army has worked hard to rebuild its image after the extensive criticism it received during past military regimes and is not willing to compromise this achievement.
In his remarks, Lagbaja also noted the ongoing support the Nigerian Army receives from both national and sub-national governments. This includes the recent acquisition of 2 BELL UH-1 Huey Helicopters, which are equipped with advanced sensors for a variety of missions, and the continued focus on the welfare of widows and family members of fallen soldiers.
The Army Chief also reflected on the recent nationwide hunger protests, acknowledging that they were a stark reminder of the importance of food and social security. In response, he pledged the Army’s commitment to reviewing its agricultural policy to enhance food security. This includes providing security cover for farmers in critical regions and exploring partnerships with government agencies and private organizations to address the country's food crisis.
Additionally, Lagbaja highlighted the Nigerian Army’s acquisition of new combat enablers, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, rifles, and ammunition, to bolster operations and security across the country.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, who was present at the event, praised the COAS for his leadership and assured the state government's support in establishing a proposed Army base in the state, among other logistics.
