Rivers State Political Crisis Escalates as Emohua Monarch Bars Non-Wike Supporters from Palace
The political tension in Rivers State has intensified as the paramount ruler of Emohua Kingdom, His Majesty Sir Ohna Sergeant Awuse, has declared that his palace is now off-limits to anyone not supporting the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. This declaration has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the monarch of partisanship.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Awuse, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and a former governorship candidate, made this announcement in a video recorded in his palace. He instructed his subjects to support Wike and warned those who do not align with Wike to stay away from the palace.
This move has been met with strong opposition from supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who have condemned the monarch’s actions. They argue that the traditional institution should remain non-political and non-partisan, serving as a unifying force for all people, regardless of their political affiliations.
Prince Charles E.O Beke, JP, a leader among Fubara’s supporters in Emuoha, expressed his disapproval, calling the monarch's declaration a “recipe for disaster” and a “bad development” that could incite further crisis in Emuoha. He emphasized that the traditional institution should unite the people, regardless of their political differences, and that the palace should remain a home for all subjects, not just those who support Wike.
Beke’s statement underlined the respect they hold for the traditional stool of Emohua Kingdom but stressed that the monarch cannot dictate the political loyalties of the people. He affirmed that members of the SIMplified Movement in Emuoha, who support Governor Fubara, will not be intimidated or blackmailed into changing their political stance.
In his statement, Beke asserted, "His Majesty, Sir Ohna Sergeant Awuse DSSRS, is at liberty to descend into the political arena and take sides if he so wishes. But he cannot dictate to the people where their own loyalty should lie." He further stated that while they respect the traditional institution, they will not allow it to be used as a tool to dictate their political conduct.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, highlighting the challenges of maintaining neutrality within traditional institutions in the face of intense political loyalty.
