Open Defecation Takes Over 7.8km Along Lagos-Ogun Corridor

Open defecation has become a significant issue along a 7.8-kilometer stretch of the Lagos-Ogun corridor on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, according to Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). Speaking at a briefing for the upcoming Lagos Sustainability Summit, titled “Building a Resilient and Sustainable Lagos,” Dr. Ajayi highlighted the growing problem and the efforts being made to address it.


Ajayi identified the population explosion and the concentration of people at major access points and cluster areas as key factors contributing to the problem of open defecation in the region. He emphasized that LASEPA, in partnership with the Ogun State Government, is taking proactive measures to combat this environmental challenge. These measures include clean-up initiatives, the commissioning of public toilets, enforcement of regulations, and the installation of lighting in areas prone to open defecation.


Ajayi also mentioned that some filling stations along the route have agreed to provide toilet facilities for free public use, in a bid to reduce the practice of open defecation. Despite these efforts, the median on the Ojodu-Berger section of the road remains heavily defaced by human waste, creating an eyesore for commuters and residents.


In response to the situation, LASEPA and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) recently launched a joint enforcement drive targeting the median from OPIC Plaza to Otedola Bridge. Over the weekend, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on his X handle that more than 20 suspects involved in open defecation had been arrested as part of this crackdown.


The authorities are determined to tackle this issue and are calling for public cooperation to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
