NIS Deports Zimbabwean Bishop for Violating Tourist Visa Rules

The  Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has deported Mr. Eben K. Nhiwatawi, a Zimbabwean bishop, due to his violation of the conditions attached to his tourist visa. The action was taken after it was discovered that Nhiwatawi, who entered Nigeria on August 21, 2024, was involved in a Methodist Church leadership election in Yola, Adamawa State. This activity was in clear violation of the terms of his Tourist Visa (F5A), which only permits tourism-related activities.

The decision to deport the bishop was communicated by KT Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, in a statement released from the NIS Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. The statement highlighted that Nhiwatawi's actions were contrary to the provisions of the Nigeria Visa Policy 2024, which governs the use of the F5A visa.

Following his apprehension on August 24, 2024, the Comptroller General of the NIS, with the necessary Ministerial approval, ordered Nhiwatawi's immediate repatriation. The NIS emphasized its commitment to enforcing immigration laws and ensuring national security by holding foreign nationals accountable to the specific terms and conditions of their visas.

The NIS reiterated that while it supports the lawful entry of foreign nationals for legitimate business and social activities, it remains vigilant in upholding the integrity of Nigeria's immigration system.

About The Tourism Visa-F5A

The Tourism Visa (F5A) is a single-entry visa issued to individuals visiting Nigeria strictly for tourism purposes. Valid for up to 90 days, this visa allows holders to engage in activities such as sightseeing and visiting family or friends. However, it prohibits employment, business activities, or participation in non-tourism-related events.

This action by the NIS underscores the importance of adhering to visa guidelines, with the agency clearly demonstrating its readiness to enforce immigration laws without compromise.
